The UK's industrial project pipeline is beginning to show real momentum.
New data from Glenigan shows that detailed planning approvals for industrial projects reached £2.13 billion in the three months to June 2026.
That's a 22% increase compared with the same period last year.
Even more strikingly, approvals for major industrial projects worth more than £100 million tripled to £603 million.
The growth spans strategically important areas including advanced manufacturing, defence, food production, logistics and industrial technology.
From planning permission to production
A new manufacturing facility can take years to move from concept to operational production.
Between those two points are thousands of decisions involving design, engineering, procurement, tooling, manufacturing, installation, testing and quality.
And increasingly, businesses are recognising that the decisions made at the beginning of a project can have a major impact on the outcome.
A tooling decision made too late can create additional cost or delay further down the programme. A design that hasn't been properly considered for manufacture can require unnecessary modifications. And a supply chain that isn't involved early enough can become a constraint when production needs to scale.
Why early manufacturing involvement matters
For specialist manufacturers, the opportunity isn't simply to receive a finished drawing and manufacture it.
The greater value can come from being involved earlier.
At MPM, our precision pattern-making team works with customers from early CAD stages to help identify potential manufacturing issues before tooling and production begin.
Building a manufacturing supply chain that can respond
The industrial projects now moving through the UK pipeline are often complex.
They may involve new facilities, new products, new production processes or the scaling of existing manufacturing.
That places greater importance on suppliers that can provide more than one isolated service.
MPM offers capabilities spanning Product Development → Precision Patterns → Tooling → GRP/Composite Manufacturing → 3D Scanning → CNC Machining & Kitting.
A growing opportunity for UK manufacturing
The increase in industrial approvals is encouraging.
But the bigger opportunity comes when those projects actually reach the manufacturing stage.
The UK's ability to benefit from industrial investment will depend not just on how much is invested, but on how effectively that investment translates into productive capacity.
That means strong engineering, reliable suppliers, skilled people and manufacturing partners capable of supporting projects from concept through to production.
The takeaway
£2.13 billion of industrial planning approvals is an encouraging number.
But the real economic impact comes when those projects move from plans on paper to products coming off production lines.
For UK manufacturers and their supply chains, that is where the opportunity begins.
